This month’s pop-up display, in Rolling Stock, Hall, of interesting Museum collections centers around vacation destinations and the railroad souvenirs passengers would bring home with them.
One traveling essential: a men’s toilet kit. Souvenirs from the Switchback Railroad in Mauch Chunk (now Jim Thorpe), Pennsylvania include a cat-shaped bud vase, a mini tureen with the state capital on it, a darning egg and a parasol-shaped pin cushion.
There is also a novelty salt water taffy box in the shape of passenger car No. 1519 from the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines by the James Candy Company in Atlantic City, New Jersey. A Phoebe Snow advertisement encourages passengers to travel by the Lackawanna Railroad to their vacation destinations.
