Special Fall Programs
Model Railroading Days
August 22 and 23, 2015 9 AM- 5 PM
This event will feature fascinating displays including intricately detailed, operating train layouts in various scales from model railroad clubs and historical groups, as well as hands-on sessions and presentations for all ages, skills and interests, from the novice to the veteran model railroader.
Watch operating model trains in action and see static exhibits from groups and individuals including the American Flyer Display, East Penn Traction Club, Lower Susquehanna Valley Modular Railroaders, Jim Rose, Strasburg Model Builders, Train Collectors Association Atlantic Division and Toy Trains in Motion. Three fun and informative sessions also are included in the regular Museum admission:
• Hidden Treasures of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania: Model Railroad Edition, 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Get a peek behind the curtain! Museum staff will showcase a number model railroad pieces from the Museum’s historic collection that are rarely seen or exhibited, and explain their significance.
• The Pennsylvania Middle Division: Complexities and Joys of Running a Large Layout, 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Museum volunteer Doug O’Brien will host this presentation about the Museum’s operating lobby layout, sharing some tips and techniques about the challenges and the enjoyment of keeping the model trains running each day.
• Model Railroader’s Toolkit, 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. Building a model railroad doesn’t necessarily require a huge investment in specialized equipment. Museum volunteer Walt Kuhl will show you the basic tools needed to get started on your own model train layout, many of which you may already have. See how easy it can be to join in this exciting hobby!
Make sure you visit Stewart Junction railway education center to go hands-on with model trains from the G scale High Iron Challenge to LEGOs. Also on display in Stewart Junction is the Museum’s detailed Pennsylvania Landscapes HO scale layout, crafted primarily by volunteers.
Visitors to Model Railroading Days, ages 18 and over, may enter a random drawing to win a garden railway model train starter kit, valued at $500.00, from our friends at Bachmann Trains.
