Railroads are fuel efficient and less polluting than trucks on a comparative basis. Many freight trains run at night. Never try to beat a train at a crossing -- they can't stop quickly!

This picture above was posed the day following No. 460's 1927 exploit in carrying newsreel films of Charles Lindbergh's triumphal reception in Washington, DC to New York City theaters faster than a competing plane. The locomotive is preserved in the Museum's Rolling Stock Hall.
