Railroads steadily developed powerful locomotives so longer trains could haul more goods and people. Today's freight trains haul huge loads without burdening our highways.
About the main picture above. This picture above was posed the day following No. 460's 1927 exploit in carrying newsreel films of Charles Lindbergh's triumphal reception in Washington, DC to New York City theaters faster than a competing plane. The locomotive is preserved in the Museum's Rolling Stock Hall.
